Carp is a very intelligent fish and can remember if they tasted some bait that was not good or if they tasted something that was attached to a hook. Carp have a need for certain nutrients, like any animal, and they can smell if something has the nutrients they need.
Some people use boilies, which are made in all different flavors including strawberry jam, tiger nut and sweet pineapple. These are a mixture of different proteins and vitamins, flavoring, kelp and different spices. This type of bait is especially good for use in cold weather.
Some people also use particle baits, which are seeds, nuts or grains. The most widely used is corn, which is great bait after soaking and boiling. Tiger nuts are hard brown nuts with a rough texture. These have to be soaked for 24 hours before being used. Other particle baits are hemp, lupins, maple peas and hempseed. Adding flavoring to particle baits make them more attractive to the fish as bait.
Groundbaits are natural ingredients such as bread crumbs, walnut flour and hemp. They are moistened with water, rolled into a ball and thrown into the water where you are going to fish. The fish are then attracted by the smell of the bait and swim over and then may take your hook.
You can also use live bait to catch carp, including crayfish, clams, snails, worms, mollusks and water fleas. Carp especially enjoy bloodworms as they can smell the amino acids emitted. While small carp enjoy the black midges and small animals without backbones, adult carp enjoy the mollusks and aquatic animals.
